Square Enix PS3 Last Remnant Delay

Posted By Coxeh, on 18/06/2008 12:03:01
Square Enix PS3 Last Remnant DelayAs you know, the PLAYSTATION 3 version of Square Enix's The Last Remnant will come out sometime after the Xbox 360 version. In a new interview with Square Enix, GameSpy asked them why it is coming out on the Xbox 360 first.

"This is mainly for development reasons. We're developing the game using the middleware Unreal Engine, and the Unreal Engine has a slower development on the PS3 side. It was only really workable after Unreal Tournament was published, so this was mainly a development decision."

Well, there you have it: development issues. Either that or we can have another BioShock cover up on our hands

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Multiplayer Survival Guide

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Multiplayer Survival GuideTargeting 101

1. Unless you're in Japan, The Auto aim feature will be set to off as the default setting. Until you get use to the game, we recommend that you turn it on. It will allow you to have a some what quicker response time, although it is not totally automatic. Once you are more familiar with the multiplayer mechanics you should turn it off. The key to a quick kill in MGS4 multiplayer is the Head Shot. Head shots are instantly lethal, even at distance. By playing in the first person mode, you should be able to quickly line up enemies and take them down.

2. Aiming needs to become automatic for you. Ensure that your D-pad becomes your best friend. With this you will be able to adjust your scope zoom by pressing the D-pad up or down.

I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration?

3. Surprise is a great tactic to use in any multiplayer match. MGS4 allows you to "play dead". To play dead, all you need to do is hold the triangle while in the prone position. New players or people busy being shot at will often walk right past you, giving you the edge. On the flip side, we recommend that you shoot at all dead bodies, until you are familiar with the real death position.

4. Use your environment to your advantage. There are often plenty of boxes around. These are prime for ambushing unwary players.

Is it a bird?

5. unfortunately, not. that is you being flung out of the "Man Cannon". Man Cannons are used to fling a player up to a higher level on a map. Be aware that when landing you are open to being shot, so scamper ASAP.

6. Don't just drop from heights in the game. Learn to use the environment such as ledges and landings. Rolling will also reduce falling damage.

Spawning because you're not pwning

7. In death match mode, spawning is totally random. Before you spawn we recommend that you always hold your select button to pause your forced re-spawn. By doing this it will give you time to check your surroundings, thus preventing you from materialising next to an enemy.

8. Keep an eye out for the fade in effect of your opponents re-spawning. Once in, you can quickly pot shot them for an easy kill.

Well I guess it would be nice, if I could touch your body...

9. Sometimes you are going to have fellow teams mates who are not dead, but unconscious, laying about. To speed up the recovery of your mates, kneel over them and press the triangle. This is good if one of your better team players is needed back in battle.

What is this, a school for ants?

10. Know your game types. As always certain game modes will allow you to think of alternative tactics to win. For example, in team death match, you are required to have more spawn points than your opponent when the timer runs out. It isn't always about getting the most kills so why not play smarter?

PS3 TEST SD Launcher 1.00 Video released!

Posted By Coxeh, on 27/05/2008 12:05:12
Below you will find a video of PS3News's PS3 TEST SD Launcher. The quality is not great nor was there sound, but it's the best capture from the old camera which they improvised and added a tune in the background.

A video capture of the PS3 would have been much clearer, but they wanted to show the PS3 in the video as well. It starts from the XMB, and allows non-NPDRM SELF's to be executed from SD card.

In the video you can see the SD Launcher loading and booting to the select screen. There is the ability to "move" throughout the list, and upon hovering on your slot of choice, pressing X.

At the moment the titles and locations are hardcoded, we need to add in support for reading either a filelist or the PARAM.SFO's.

The real impressive part of the video is in regards to the Ridge Racer 7 Demo. We obtained the Ridge Racer 7 Demo from an Official PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc. Upon receiving, we decrypted the SELF, rebuilt and patched it. This patching allows us to run the SELF from other devices. We picked this Demo as it was small, around 500MB, as our largest SD card on hand was 1GB.

However, there is an issue with newer games. It seems there is an additional "check" that we have yet to pinpoint. But this does work fine with most older PS3 games, as well as any developmental SELF.

Needless to say, this only works on a Debug/TEST PS3 box... it will not work on a retail PS3 console (yet!)

BioShock finally coming to the playstation 3

Posted By Coxeh, on 23/05/2008 09:27:36
BioShock finally coming to the playstation 3 The rumours are true: critically acclaimed Take-Two shooter BioShock is finally, definitely coming to PlayStation 3.

Details are thin on the ground at the moment (i.e. there are none), but the next issue of UK PlayStation mag PSM3 - which is on UK newsstands June 5 - promises a lengthy preview of the PS3 version along with a depth charge of screenshots.

The highly lauded shooter was originally an Xbox 360 exclusive, but rumours of a PS3 version have been surfacing even before its release.

We called Take-Two's UK office who would only give us a flat "no comment". That being the case, expect an official announcement somewhere down the line.

There's another European mag that's touting the game in its upcoming issue too. We're beginning to see a pattern emerging here...

We've no idea what, if anything, the PS3 version will get in the way of extra content. The only extra stuff 360 and PC versions got post-release were new plasmids. But frankly we had such a bloody good time exploring Rapture on PC and 360 that we're well up for another dive on PS3.

A PS3 Game's Flow of Execution; PS3's Base AIX!

Posted By Coxeh, on 23/05/2008 08:44:02
we are going to explain a PS3 game's boot process, as well as explain why the PARAM.SFO is so important.

The Flowchart in the image attached below explains a PS3 game's startup procedure from insertion to its execution.

Most of it is self-explanatory upon viewing the chart, however, there are a few notes. Any Retail SELF on a Blu-ray disc is flagged so it can only be decrypted and executed from the disc, and nowhere else.

Furthermore, the PARAM.SFO is also of importance... Upon insertion, the PS3 reads the Title ID of the disc in the PARAM.SFO and inserts it into the DB. Once the game is executed and decrypted, the Title ID is checked yet again to make sure it matches. If it does not (think a disc swap), the PS3 will silently error, and return to XMB.

In a final note, our PS3 Devs have been digging through numerous documents and patents, and came to the conclusion that the PS3 uses AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) as a base!
